about

"Chestnut is a keeper of the flame, a lyrical and expressive pianist who likes to use notes in sculpting songs...Chestnut is all taste and class in this present performance—at the top of his game."
-- C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz, 31 July 2014

“MIDNIGHT MELODIES is not just a live album but also a tribute album to [John] Hicks. It features three compositions by Hicks and two by [Victor] Lewis (as well as a pair by Billy Strayhorn), and Chestnut’s astonishing chops are leavened, as always, by an impish playfulness and a churchy fervor."
-- Geoffrey Himes, The Baltimore Sun, 23 December 2014

***

The first live recording by the great jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, MIDNIGHT MELODIES captures a momentous night at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in New York City.

Joining Cyrus are bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis who both worked with the late pianist John Hicks, an important mentor and friend to Chestnut. Together, the trio takes listeners on a musical odyssey that includes the music by Billy Strayhorn, John Coltrane, and, of course, Hicks. There are also originals by Victor Lewis and Cyrus culminating in an impressive extended version of “Naima’s Love Song.” Cyrus is one of the great piano voices of his generation—or any generation—as he proves again with this rewarding album.

In 2006, Josh Tyrangiel, music critic for Time, wrote: “What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space.”
